UMIDIGI A3 Review: It is not Expensive but Beautiful Phone

We have gone back to look Umidigi and this time it has done with a low-cost phone under the name of UMIDIGI A3 in our review.

The new phone that we have had the opportunity to review in detail has surprised us very pleasantly for its performance in almost all fields at its reduced price that barely surpasses $80.

Among its key features, it has a quad-core MediaTek processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, facial recognition as well as a fingerprint reader and a dual rear camera to achieve the “bokeh” effect that has been so popular over the last years.

Also, there are power outlet ( European) and a Type-C cable since it is the type of cable used to load and carry out data transfer.

Here we leave you with the unboxing video and first impressions.

UMIDIGI A3: Design and Appearance

The UMIDIGI A3 in the test has a standard 5.5-inch panel with HD Plus resolution, which comes to 1440 x 720 pixels.

UMIDIGI A3 Review: It is not Expensive but Beautiful Phone

An element that is very appreciated is that despite being a panel of 5.5 inches the dimensions of the phone are quite contained.

UMIDIGI A3 Review: It is not Expensive but Beautiful Phone

In the end, because the phone just includes frames we find a smartphone that has virtually the same measures as an iPhone 6S or an iPhone 7, both phones with 4.7-inch panels instead of 5.5 as is the case with UMIDIGI A3.

UMIDIGI A3 Review: It is not Expensive but Beautiful Phone

Specifically, its measurements are 147.2 x 7.0 x 8.5 mm while its weight is just 186 grams.

UMIDIGI A3 Review: It is not Expensive but Beautiful Phone

Below the 200 grams typically found in phones of these dimensions, which is also assessed for the portability of UMIDIGI A3 in our analisis.

UMIDIGI A3: Display

The quality of the panel is really good and playing videos in high resolution we have to say that its performance is optimal.

UMIDIGI A3 Review: It is not Expensive but Beautiful Phone

This is ideal when viewing Netflix series in HD quality comfortably. This is something that can also be seen in the unboxing video.

UMIDIGI A3 Review: It is not Expensive but Beautiful Phone

The screen of UMIDIGI A3 has a high-quality matrix with good viewing angles and contrast. In general, for the money, I do not have anything to the quality of the screen.

UMIDIGI A3: Hardware and Performance

The team has a pretty good performance despite its tight price. Specifically, the UMIDIGI A3 subject of the review comes with a MediaTek MT6739 processor, successor to the popular MT6737 that we saw in numerous models last year.

UMIDIGI A3 Review: It is not Expensive but Beautiful Phone

Accompanying the processor we have a 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage that can be expanded through the use of microSD cards up to 256 GB.

We have used the phone in many different cases and its performance has been fluid in all of them.

UMIDIGI A3 Review: It is not Expensive but Beautiful Phone

Obviously, you can not ask for the performance of a UMIDIGI A3 that costs 5 times more but overall its performance is very smooth without lags or problems.

In fact, in the tests of GeekBench carried out the phone has achieved a score of 667 with a single core and 1839 cores with all its placing performance above the Nexus 5 and a tad below the Xiaomi Mi 4C that has scored 1960 on the platform.

The only “problem” to call it in any way when doing the review of the UMIDIGI A3 was its performance at the graphics level in a very demanding game as is the case of “Need for Speed: No limits”.

Here we have to say that the phone is not I perform very smoothly as it is a very demanding game on a graphics level.

UMIDIGI A3 Review: It is not Expensive but Beautiful Phone

For its part, with the game Real Racing 3, the performance was quite positive and we have not noticed any lag when playing this game or other games with similar graphics requirements.

UMIDIGI A3: Software

The UMIDIGI A3 reviewed comes with Android 8.1 in pure version, this means that we have not found any kind of bloatware in the system.

UMIDIGI A3 Review: It is not Expensive but Beautiful Phone

It has arrived completely clean in a completely pure Android interface, which is appreciated because of the phone.

We did not arrive loaded with applications that we neither want nor need.

In terms of security, the UMIDIGI A3 offers 4 unlocking options, we have the traditional unlocks by pattern and PIN as well as an unlock by fingerprint and the innovative unlocking by facial recognition.

While we expected that fingerprint unlocking would work correctly since this is the case with most smartphones (and it has), we were not quite sure how facial recognition would work.

UMIDIGI A3 Review: It is not Expensive but Beautiful Phone

After configuring facial recognition in the UMIDIGI A3 in our test settings facial recognition works absolutely marvelously and has been one of the biggest surprises that the team has given us.

UMIDIGI A3 Review: It is not Expensive but Beautiful Phone

We have tested the unlocking by facial recognition in a wide range of scenarios, both in good light and in very low light environments and we have to say that easily 9 out of 10 times has worked correctly.

The only thing you have to do is hold the phone in front of your face at a distance between 20 and 50 centimeters and it recognizes you and unlocks instantly.

UMIDIGI A3 Review: It is not Expensive but Beautiful Phone

I have also done the test of placing several different photographs of my face in front of the UMIDIGI A3 to see if he was fooled and fortunately I have to say that it has not done anything and only unlocks when he is looking at my face in “person” to say it mode.

UMIDIGI A3: Cameras

I have always said that the biggest difference today between high-end phones and entry-level models is the camera and in the case of the UMIDIGI A3, it has not been the exception.

UMIDIGI A3 Review: It is not Expensive but Beautiful Phone

That said, within all the low-cost phones that we have had the opportunity to review in recent years, this is one of the best cameras that we have been able to review for an entry-level phone.

We are talking about the 12-megapixel rear camera and the 5-megapixel secondary sensor for depth effect.

UMIDIGI A3 Review: It is not Expensive but Beautiful Phone

With regard to the dual camera, as expected, the effect achieved using this camera is quite artificial and except for very specific cases we do not recommend the use of the “bokeh” mode because the circle around the photographed object is quite artificial.

On the other hand, the front camera with a resolution of 8-megapixels has also shown good performance getting enough light in the lens.

UMIDIGI A3 Review: It is not Expensive but Beautiful Phone

Also is often not the case and we have photos made with front cameras where it seems that we are inside a cave.

UMIDIGI A3: Connectivity

At the level of connectivity, the UMIDIGI A3 in the analisis provides support for 4G networks and in our tests, it works correctly with these networks.

UMIDIGI A3 Review: It is not Expensive but Beautiful Phone

Also noteworthy is the WiFi connectivity that in this case is a / b / g / n instead of the b / g / n standard that we see in mobiles of this price range.

This has achieved that having a compatible router the downloads are made fairly quickly.

UMIDIGI A3 Review: It is not Expensive but Beautiful Phone

Neither need to be grateful that they have included within the options of connectivity an FM radio, something that today is not at all usual in the phones of large firms as well as Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity.

UMIDIGI A3: Battery

Another element that we liked a lot in relation to the Umidigi smartphone is its loading speed.

UMIDIGI A3 Review: It is not Expensive but Beautiful Phone

Specifically, thanks to its micro USB cable, the phone gets the full charge in just under 2 hours.

UMIDIGI A3 Review: It is not Expensive but Beautiful Phone

In turn, the autonomy of the phone is not bad, easily holding the day of use.

UMIDIGI A3: Conclusions and Reviews

We finish this review of the UMIDIGI A3 in our review saying that we are very, very satisfied with the phone.

UMIDIGI A3 Review: It is not Expensive but Beautiful Phone

While it is true that its performance in games of high graphics requirements leaves much to be desired, in the rest of the sections the phone looks like few within its price range.

Its 2GB of RAM allows a smooth performance to use many applications at once, its facial recognition has surprised us a lot and the panel quality is one of the best we have seen in a phone of this price.

UMIDIGI A3 Review: It is not Expensive but Beautiful Phone

All in all, a mobile with which you will definitely get it right and that you can buy at a very reasonable price.
