Xiaomi’s Redmi sub-brand recently introduced a new generation in its line of laptops and the device is called Redmibook 16.
Earlier, I told my impressions about the Redmibook 14 and Redmibook 13 models, which you can read about in the link below.
If two previous generations worked on Intel processors, then the new laptop received a processor from AMD series Ryzen. How it behaves in performance tests, you will learn in a detailed review below.
The main issue remains the price tag. Depending on the modification of Redmibook 16, the price will vary. For example, with AMD Ryzen 5 the price is about $800, and with AMD Ryzen 7 about $900. Given the prices of previous models, the new generation of a large laptop has a slightly higher cost.
In terms of technical specs, I have a maximum version with an AMD Ryzen 7 4700U processor, a 16.1-inch screen, a 16/512 GB memory version, 48 Wh battery capacity, and much more.
Before I start talking about performance tests, I want to share a little with you my impressions of the configuration and assembly.

A new generation of laptops is shipped in an ordinary cardboard box and this is a typical solution for most Redmi devices.
Inside the box, I found a well-packed laptop in protective foam, so I had no problems with transportation. In addition to the laptop, the kit includes – instructions, 65 W power adapter and Type-C format power cable. A bonus is the availability of an adapter for a European plug.
I want to note that the size of the power adapter is quite compact and not heavy, and also the cable length of more than 1.5 meters will allow you to connect the device to charging without any difficulties.
If we compare the appearance of different generations of the Redmibook line, then the model with 16 diagonal looks completely identical like its predecessors.
For example, on the front side of the lid of the laptop, there are a minimalistic inscription Redmi designed by Xiaomi. This inscription does not change in all laptop models from Redmi. In general, I like this inscription and I’m glad that it does not highlight the laptop much, as it happens with other Chinese brands.
Next, I want to test the opening of the lid with one hand. The result was positive for me, as I was able to open the lid without any problems.
As for the build quality, I have no problems at all, as it is with the materials used. The entire body is made of brushed metal alloy, which is very pleasant to the touch.
The dimensions of the laptop are not very compact since the screen size was 16.1 inches. Therefore, a laptop can be attributed to a stationary device, but sometimes it can be taken with you to study or to work. The dimensions were 367.2 x 232.8 x 17.5 mm and weight about 1.8 kg.
As for the quality of the screen, I did not identify any strong problems. It uses an IPS matrix with a resolution of Full HD or 1920 x 1080 pixels with an aspect ratio of 16: 9.
The frames around the screen are quite small and amounted to 5 mm from the left, from the right and from above, but the frame below is slightly larger. It houses the company logo. It is worth noting that all Redmibook models do not have a camera for video calls. This will be a significant minus for most users.
The device has enough brightness if you use the Redmibook 16 laptop, not in direct sunlight. The indicator of 300 nits provides comfortable work in the room, but not on the street. As I mentioned, the laptop is intended for use in-home or office purposes.
If you look at the result of sRGB, then the figure was 100%. Thus, the color rendering is very realistic and natural. In this case, the colors are quite saturated and deep. I can also approve about viewing angles, I have no questions for them.
On the right side of the case are a USB 2.0 port and a 3.5 mm audio jack for headphones with a built-in microphone.
The left side of the laptop received a second-generation Type-C 3.1 for charging, HDMI 2.0, USB 3.1, and the last Type-C port for data transfer.
The underside of the laptop received five anti-slip legs, holes for the cooling system, two speakers with a power of 2 watts each from DTS Audio. You can also see stickers in the central part with the main features of the device.
The keyboard has black keys and it is really full-sized. The distance between the keys is very large, so I had no problems typing at all. The LEDs are located on the keys themselves – these are Caps Lock and power buttons in the upper right corner. But there is no keyboard backlight, this is the same problem for all models of the Redmibook line.
The touchpad has a rather large surface, which is very easy and simple to operate. In addition, the touchpad has support from Windows 10.
In general, the build quality and materials used are quite high, but not without drawbacks. For example, the device does not have a front camera and keyboard backlight.
Performance and Software
As I already mentioned, I have the maximum version with an AMD Ryzen 7 4700U processor in my review. It operates on an eight-core basis and has a frequency of 2.0 GHz and in Turbo Boost it can be overclocked to 4.1 GHz.
The integrated AMD Radeon Graphics processor is capable of showing good results in games. I conducted several game tests and the performance is pretty good. The games such as GTA V, The Witcher 3, and others showed from 30 to 45 fps.
Of the negative points, I can attribute a little heat to the “WASD” keys, which are used to control most games. The temperature reached about 45 degrees. Other parts of the laptop did not heat above 30 degrees Celsius.
The laptop Redmibook 16 received 16GB of RAM format DDR4 with two channels and 512 GB of SSD memory. As a result, the speed of internal memory did not surprise me very much and this is not the indicator that I would like to see in 2020. About 550 Mbps read and 530 Mbps write.
Below I will leave some benchmark tests and you can analyze the performance tests for yourself. But on my own, I will note that the AMD Ryzen 7 4700U processor shows much better performance when compared with the Intel Core i7-9700TE or Intel Core i7-1068NG7.
Out of the box, the laptop comes with the Chinese operating system Windows 10. Managing and using this OS is generally very difficult if you do not know the Chinese language.
Therefore, for many users, this will become another problem or complexity. The first time I turned on, I changed the language, but to change it first you need to use your own Windows key to activate the system. After that, you can wirelessly install English or another language.
For wireless capabilities, the device received a MIMO module with a dual WLAN antenna. There is also support for the network protocol 802.11ac with frequencies of 2.4 and 5 GHz. The maximum theoretical network speed can be reached up to 867 Mbps. In addition, the laptop received Bluetooth 5.0 wireless.
Inside the case of the Redmibook 16 laptop, there is a 48Wh battery capacity that can last about 9 hours, depending on the degree of load.
If you play games, use heavy programs, then battery life will be less than 4 hours. But with simple tasks, for example, working with documents, watching videos, the battery life will be more than 8 hours.
The charging time through a 65W power adapter will be about 1 hour, which is good news.
Conclusion and Reviews
If you need a good and powerful laptop, then the Redmibook 16 is definitely a good choice.
There are many positive aspects, for example, a large and convenient 16.1-inch screen with good brightness and color reproduction. In terms of games or complex programs, you should not worry, as it copes with them perfectly.
In addition, the build quality, materials, and appearance with a minimalist design make the device convenient for full use.
It was not without minuses, for example, the device heats up a bit during games or difficult tasks at about 45 degrees. Also, the laptop did not receive a slot for a memory card, selfie camera, and keyboard backlight.
Price and Where to buy cheaper?
Naturally, the price tag is not small, but do not forget about good performance, which is superior to its competitors with Intel processors.
