Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G Review: Improved copy of Mi 10T Lite

At the end of 2020, Redmi decided not only to please me with the new Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G model but also its sincere fans.

This is an updated version of the smartphone that has received many interesting features that are very similar to the flagship models. But will the updated smartphone surprise me?

The first thing I want to tell you about the price tag is before I talk about features and other features. Currently, the price for the new smartphone Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G is $330 for the 6/128 GB version.

From the technical specifications, you can see that the 5G version uses the new Snapdragon 750G processor with 8-nanometer technology. You could see the same chipset in another model from the Xiaomi brand – this is the Mi 10T Lite model.

In addition, the smartphone received a 6.67-inch Full HD screen with a 120 Hz refresh rate, IP53 water protection, stereo sound, and a 108-megapixel main module. I note right away that there is an NFC module here so that you do not search for a long time in my full and in-depth review.

So, is the smartphone very similar to its predecessors or not? And what makes it stand out from the rest of the competition? Let me try to answer all these questions.

Unboxing and packaging

The new Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G smartphone comes in a regular box, which is made of white. On the front, you can find information about the model name, the Mi icon, as well as its main features.

Everything inside the package is packed with high quality and during transportation, the smartphone came to me without any damage. In the box itself, I found – the smartphone itself with a protective cellophane packaging. I also found a separate envelope with documentation, a SIM tray needle, and a protective transparent silicone case.

At the bottom of the package are a 33W power adapter and a Type-C cable. That is, the equipment of the 5G version of the smartphone remained almost the same as in the previous generation. Even the power adapter is exactly the same as on the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max and Mi 10T Lite.

Design, build quality and materials

If we talk about the quality of the materials used in the Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G model, then you will not see anything surprising here. For example, the back and front panels are made of Gorilla Glass 5, and the side ends are made of plastic.

The exact same combination was in previous models, for example, Redmi Note 9 Pro, Redmi Note 9 Pro Max, and Mi 10T Lite. Definitely, these are not the worst materials to manufacture. And the weakest component will be the frame itself, which is made of plastic. Of course, I would like to see a metal frame here, but alas – this is not a flagship smartphone.

Despite this fact, the build quality is pretty good, and even with strong twisting, the smartphone felt good and without extraneous sounds. I liked both the build quality and material use.

As for dimensions, the model measures 165.4 x 76.8 x 9 mm and weighs about 215 grams. For example, for comparison, the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max has 165.5 x 76.7 x 8.8 mm and 209 grams, while the Mi 10T Lite has 165.4 x 76.8 x 9 mm and 214.5 grams. That is, it is easy to guess that the Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G and Mi 10T Lite 5G models are absolutely identical, both in terms of dimensions and weight.

In addition, the new updated model has received splash protection under the IP53 standard. Of course, this is not full-fledged protection against water, but it is also not bad, as for a mid-budget smartphone class.

The control keys on the Note 9 Pro 5G are located in a typical place as for the line of smartphones from the Redmi brand. That is a power button with an integrated fingerprint scanner and a volume rocker on the right side.

On the left side, there is a hybrid slot for dual nano-SIM cards or one SIM card and a microSDXC memory card. At the bottom, there is the main speaker, Type-C port, microphone, and 3.5mm audio jack. Above, an infrared sensor was installed to control household devices, such as a TV.

It is also worth noting that there is another additional speaker on the front of the smartphone at the top. Therefore, the Note 9 Pro 5G has stereo sound and I will immediately note that the sound quality is quite good, and the volume level is quite high.

On the back of the device are the main quad camera and an LED flash. I’ll talk about the main features of the camera with examples of photos a little later.

The manufacturer presented the new smartphone in three colors – blue pink, gray, and blue. I especially liked the blue pink color, it is very unusual and looks beautiful.

Screen and image quality

I think that not only it seems to me that Redmi produces its smartphones with the same screen size – 6.67 inches. The same goes for the updated Note 9 Pro 5G smartphone model.

It also got Full HD or 1080 x 2400 pixels resolution. At the same time, the aspect ratio was 20: 9, and the pixel density per inch was about 395 PPI.

In addition, the screen brightness in typical use was 450 nits, and the maximum value was 600 nits. As for a mid-range smartphone, this value is sufficient for everyday use. Even in sunny and bright weather, I had no problems with readability.

As for the frames around the screen, they are minimal at the side ends, but the chin is quite large below. Above you can find a round cutout for the front camera. In the screen settings, you can remove the round cutout, but the screen frame will appear even larger.

Even in the settings, you can choose some interesting options. For example, setting it to black instead of white. You can also play around with the color scheme, for example, make the screen bluer or warmer.

But another and main feature of the Note 9 Pro 5G is the 120Hz refresh rate. This is a nice feature, so if you are a fan of playing games, then you will definitely like this screen.

Since this is not an AMOLED or OLED screen, there is no Always-On feature here. I think this is just one flaw in the Note 9 Pro 5G screen.

Performance, games, benchmarks, and OS

A little earlier, Xiaomi has already presented a smartphone with a Snapdragon 750G processor and this model is called Mi 10T Lite 5G. As for our hero, the same chipset is also installed on Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G and it shows very good results in benchmark tests.

For example, in the AnTuTu test, the smartphone scored almost 344 thousand points. This is a really good indicator for a mid-range smartphone. Looking at the GeekBench 5 benchmark results, the single-core test scored 659 points and the multi-core test achieved 2003 points.

But I didn’t notice much of a difference between Snapdragon 750G and Snapdragon 720G, Snapdragon 730G, and Snapdragon 765G if we talk about everyday use. The test scores are very similar, but there are differences in the results.

In terms of gaming capabilities, the Note 9 Pro 5G uses the Adreno 619 GPU. This processor performs well in heavy and demanding games even at high and ultra-high graphics settings.

For example, I ran the Bullet Force game, then at high graphics settings, fps was within 120 frames per second. In the game Dead Trigger 2 on ultra-high graphics settings, the smartphone also showed the result at 120 FPS. But the game PUBG Mobile showed about 40 FPS on an average graphics setting. At the same time, the temperature of the processor and its components does not exceed 50 degrees.

The new Note 9 Pro 5G has a wide variety of memory layouts. For example, you can choose the version with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage. Also available in 8/128 GB and 8/256 GB versions.

The smartphone is controlled by the Android 10 operating system and with the proprietary MIUI 12 user interface. I have a global version of the smartphone, so many languages are already available here out of the box. Also, Google applications such as Play Store, Youtube, and others are preinstalled on the device.

The user interface is pretty slick and I didn’t find any lag in my standard tests. In terms of functionality and features, everything is also good here, for example, you can use the pop-up window function and other features.

Wirelessly, Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G was equipped with a dual-band Wi-Fi module and Bluetooth 5.1 generation. In addition, there is also a fast GPS module and an NFC module for contactless payment onboard the device.

Camera and sample photos

The main difference between the Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G and the Xiaomi Mi 10T Lite is the 108-megapixel main module. Let me remind you that the Mi 10T Lite model has a resolution of 64 megapixels. Thus, the Note 9 Pro 5G has even better image quality than the Mi 10T Lite.

The main module is called the HM2 sensor with an f/1.8 aperture. Thanks to this, photos at night turn out to be quite good and with good detail. I can also note that the HM2 module works due to the connection of 12-megapixel resolution by 9 times.

The second module has already received an 8-megapixel resolution with an aperture of f/2.2. This sensor is designed for ultra-wide shots. The quality of the photos is really good and the corners are not as blurry as they are on cheaper smartphones.

The third and fourth modules have a 2-megapixel resolution for macro and portrait photography. Naturally, the quality of photos during macro mode is not the best, but the work of the bokeh mode is at a decent level. Naturally, I’ll leave an album with sample photos on Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G below.

The front camera has a 16-megapixel module with an f/2.5 aperture. At the same time, the maximum video resolution was 1080p, and the main camera can shoot at 4K resolution and 30 frames per second.

Battery and run time

The battery life depends on many factors, for example, on the selected screen refresh rate, whether 60 Hz or 120 Hz. Also how often do you play games and load the processor and much more? My result with active use was about 1.5 days.

Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G Review: Improved copy of Mi 10T Lite

During my tests, I ran benchmark tests, played heavy games, ran camera tests, and more. With everyday use, battery life will be longer. I assume that two days of work will only be provided by the 4820 mAh battery capacity.

I want to remind you that the same battery capacity was on the Mi 10T Lite model, but the Redmi Note 9 Pro and Redmi Note 9 Pro Max models had a capacity of 5020 mAh.

Despite the reduced capacity value, the battery life is almost the same thanks to the modern chipset. Charging is also worth mentioning, as in less than 1 hour, you can charge your device from 0 to 100% using the 33W power adapter.

Conclusion, reviews, pros, and cons

The updated smartphone Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G is almost no different from the Xiaomi Mi 10T Lite model. But the main difference between these models is the main 108-megapixel camera module and more choice of the amount of memory in the Redmi device.

Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G Review: Improved copy of Mi 10T Lite

I can confidently say that the Note 9 Pro 5G is currently the cheapest smartphone to have a 108MP camera. It’s really cool, but besides this feature, it has many other positive aspects.

For example, I can attribute to the pluses a modern Snapdragon 750G processor, a high battery life, 120 Hz screen refresh rate, an all-glass case, and even the presence of an NFC module.

Of the minuses, I can single out – this is an IPS screen, not AMOLED or OLED, I also do not see much sense in macro mode and a plastic frame of the case.

Price and where to buy cheaper?

As I wrote at the beginning of the review, you can buy Redmi Note 9 Pro 5G at a low price for only $ 329.99 for the 6/128 GB version.

This is a good price for its filling and I can definitely recommend this model for purchase with ease. Of course, if you already have a Mi 10T Lite model, then you will not notice a strong difference between these devices.
