OnePlus Buds Z Review: What To Expect From Second Gen TWS Earbuds?

The other day I tested the mid-budget version of the smartphone from OnePlus, but today we will talk about the new wireless earbuds called OnePlus Buds Z.

This is an updated generation of TWS earbuds and I have already tested the OnePlus Buds model before. If you are interested in my opinion, then I will leave a link to a detailed review here.

As for the price, for the first generation, the cost of the new OnePlus Buds Z I became a little less. Currently, you can get earbuds at a really good price for as little as $50. Let me remind you that the price tag for the first generation OnePlus Buds is now around $70.

Let’s find out what is the reason for the different costs between the two generations. But first of all, a little about the technical parts. The new TWS earbuds use a dynamic driver, Bluetooth 5.0 wireless technology, and support for AAC and SBC codecs. In addition, the earbuds boast a comfortable fit, support for fast charging, and a good battery life.

Thus, I propose to start my in-depth review to find out what the new headphone model is capable of and what to expect from it.

Unboxing and packaging

Like the first generation of wireless earbuds, the new OnePlus Buds Z comes in a square box in white and red. On the front, there is a drawing of the earbuds and the inscriptions of the model and company name. The side faces received icons with the main features and functions. And on the back of the box, you can see a list of technical specifications.

Inside the package, the earbuds themselves were packed in a high-quality box, there were instructions for use, a Type-C power cable, and a set of silicone ear tips.

The first difference between the OnePlus Buds Z and the OnePlus Buds is that the new headphone model is not made in the form of a semi in-ear earbuds. Therefore, the set includes ear tips of various sizes and at the same time of quite high and good quality.

Design, build quality and materials

As I said, the main difference between the two generations is the presence of ear tips on the new TWS headphone model. Also, the OnePlus Buds Z earbuds received a slightly redesigned, and now they are slightly smaller in size than the first generation from the OnePlus brand.

For example, the dimensions of one earbud are 38 x 23 mm, and the weight is about 4.3 grams. Therefore, wearing the updated generation has become a little better. After a bad experience with the first generation, the manufacturer is taking the right steps towards success. But I also can’t call the Buds Z earbuds very comfortable.

Maybe in the third generation, there will be more comfortable, but no one knows when the new generation will be released.

If we talk about the quality of performance, then everything here is at a fairly high level. Although the earbuds are made of glossy white plastic, the plastic itself is very high quality and practically indistinguishable from Apple’s flagship earbuds. In general, I liked how the earbuds were assembled, but I would replace the glossy plastic with matte.

I can also note that you can easily do sports with earbuds and even run in them. They sit firmly in the ear canal and I didn’t have the feeling that now they would fly out and get lost. In addition, the Buds Z earbuds received good water protection under the IP55 standard. That is, they will not be afraid of sweat or light rain.

On the front of the second-generation earbuds from OnePlus, there is a touch control button and an LED indicator for operation. At the bottom of the leg, there is a hole for a microphone, and on the inside, there are magnetic contacts for charging. In addition, here you can see the proximity sensor, which is responsible for the automatic pause function.

Now a little about the charging box and it has received quite strong changes when compared to the first generation of TWS earbuds. The first thing to tell about the charging box is the high-quality assembly. The lid opens very easily and without much play, and the magnetic connection is very strong.

One LED indicator was installed on the front of the box. At the same time, on the back of the box, there is a Type-C port for charging and a mechanical button for the first pairing or reset. I also note that there is no protection from water in the box itself.

Connection, latency, and control

Like the previous generation of OnePlus wireless earbuds, the new Buds Z model received a Bluetooth 5.0 version of the wireless connection. Also on board, you can find AAC and SBC audio codecs.

When I first connected with my OnePlus 7T Pro smartphone, I had slight micro-lags and the sound was a little late. But after the update, this problem disappeared. For example, now I do not feel any latency when playing games or even watching videos on Youtube.

Individually, the earbuds work well. Also, the earbuds received a proprietary application and the main advantage in the program is the ability to see the box’s charge level as a percentage.

But the touch control remains the same as the previous generation. OnePlus Buds Z you can only skip tracks forward or backward, call the voice assistant and play or pause. In addition, let me remind you about proximity sensors. If during listening, you take one of the earbuds out of the ear canal, then the music will pause and if you insert it back, then playback will resume.

Sound and microphone quality

At the beginning of the review, I already mentioned that a dynamic driver is used inside the housing of the OnePlus Buds Z earbuds. But what size it is, I did not find any information. But I feel it is a 10mm dynamic driver.

As for the sound itself, there is enough volume reserve and listening to music at 100% volume level is very difficult, given the fact that these are in-ear earbuds. Therefore, I advise you to hear music at 50% volume level in a quiet place, this value will be enough.

Low frequencies also play well, you can find light bass in them. But as usual, you always want more bass and more volume.

The mids and highs are well-tuned and sound good considering their cost. Yes, I cannot compare the sound quality with the first generation, since they are made in the form of in-ear headphones. But if we compare competitors, then the OnePlus Buds Z plays very well.

It is also worth telling a little about your impressions about the quality of the microphone. Overall, the earbuds received typical quality for both their shape. The interlocutors always heard me clearly and without unnecessary questions, even in noisy places.

Battery and run time

Each OnePlus Buds Z earbud has a 35mAh battery capacity. This is not the highest indicator, but as my practice has shown, the battery life at 50% volume level was just over 5 hours.

Once again, I note that even at a 50% volume level, this value will be sufficient, since the volume margin is high. In addition, you can use a charging box with a capacity of 450 mAh and achieve a total runtime of up to 20 hours.

A bonus is the presence of fast charging and for 10 minutes of charging the earbuds, you can get up to 2 hours of listening time at 50% volume level. A full charge will take you up to 1.5 hours.

Conclusion, reviews, pros, and cons

The OnePlus Buds Z are slightly modified earbuds when compared to the first generation. The improvements have gone for the better, but it’s difficult to call them global.

For example, on the positive side, I can say that the design is a little more comfortable compared to the previous model, the appearance of ear tips and the sound quality has become much better.

On the negative side, I can attribute it to the weak functionality of touch controls and not the most comfortable fit.

Overall, I liked the Buds Z earbuds, but OnePlus has more generations to come to achieve the perfect price/performance ratio.

Price and where to buy cheap?

Now you can buy OnePlus Buds Z wireless earbuds at a low price which was $47.64 with a 21% discount.

Considering that the cost has become slightly less than the first generation of OnePlus wireless earbuds. Then I can definitely recommend the new Buds Z model for purchase.
