OnePlus 5T Review: Professional Bezel-Less Design for Attractive Price

OnePlus is probably one of the most unusual success stories of recent years. The Chinese smartphone maker was only founded in late 2013 – a time when the smartphone market already had a reputation for being saturated, and even billionaire manufacturers failed.

Nonetheless, the small company managed to earn a place in the highly competitive market with modest means and a clever strategy.

Already the debut, the OnePlus One, lured with competitive price and skilled guerrilla marketing. Greater success was denied only by the controversial invitation system.

Meanwhile, OnePlus is more than just an insider tip. The company, which was founded with the support of its “opponent” Oppo, makes life especially for manufacturers of high-priced smartphones difficult.

The OnePlus 5T in our review should continue this success, even if one approaches the competition in terms of price. The future once has already tested the sixth model of the “flagship killer”.

OnePlus 5T: Design and Appearance

“A brazen iPhone copy”: Allegations like these had to put up with OnePlus, although the new model was not even officially presented.

After the presentation was relatively clear: With the iPhone, the new OnePlus model has little in common. Although it may rely on a black case and Pentalob screws, the device is much different in the hand than the competition from Apple.

OnePlus 5T Review: Professional Bezel-Less Design for Attractive Price

OnePlus relies on a high quality machined unibody case made of aluminum, whose frame is rather narrow (altogether 7.3 millimeters thin).

A pretty steep edge around the case, which is also supposed to conceal the transition from the case to the display, makes the smartphone pleasant to hold with one hand.

However, one-handed operation is not always possible due to the size of the 6.01-inch smartphone. In particular, for the opposite side, you have to stretch significantly – in case of doubt you should prefer the OnePlus 5T with two hands.

The matte back is smooth, but still offers good grip and feels high quality. Visually, it hardly stands out from the competition. Only the ribbed slider, with which you can quickly set the smartphone to silence, cannot be found on any other Android smartphone.

In addition to the slider, the power button on the right and the volume rocker on the left side were processed very high quality.

As with its predecessor, there is a capacitive home button, in which the relatively brisk fingerprint sensor was installed.

The softkeys for Back as well as the Task Manager can be found to the left and right next to it. All buttons are easily accessible, but the smartphone can alternatively be activated by double-tapping on the screen.

Painfully missed, despite the AMOLED panel: An always-on feature that displays the clock or black-and-white notifications on the screen when inactive. However, this can be retrofitted relatively easily via third-party apps, such as “Always On AMOLED”.

Visually, the OnePlus 5T in our analisis comes even without an “edge display” the frameless display of the Samsung Galaxy S8 amazingly close.

The almost seamless transition between screen and housing conceals the almost one-millimeter wide frame with a slight rounding quite well. The strong black of the AMOLED panel also contributes to the optical illusion.

OnePlus 5T Review: Professional Bezel-Less Design for Attractive Price

With a weight of 164 grams, it is pleasantly light and weighs 15 grams less than the iPhone 7 Plus despite the same screen size.

The weight of the smartphone is also well distributed. On the back only the engraved OnePlus, logo-emblazoned. In addition, stands out the dual camera and fingerprint reader, which protrudes just under a millimeter above the back, similar to the iPhone 7 Plus.

The processing of the smartphone is consistently outstanding, hardly any other smartphone in this price range can keep up here.

OnePlus 5T: Screen

Anyone who owns a OnePlus 5 or has already used it once knows the OnePlus 5T display. Both models rely on the same AMOLED panel from Samsung, which resolves with Full HD Plus (2160 by 1080 pixels).

Although OnePlus promises slight improvements, including support for the DCI-P3 color space, there is no visible difference between the two models.

OnePlus 5T Review: Professional Bezel-Less Design for Attractive Price

The default setting provides fairly bold, slightly oversized colors that are more like the Adobe RGB color space.

However, DCI-P3 is particularly beneficial for films because the US film industry has agreed on color space as the standard. But it is also possible to freely determine the color temperature.

The screen content is razor-sharp (pixel density 400 ppi), but it comes to scrolling to the so-called “jelly scrolling” effect.

OnePlus 5T Review: Professional Bezel-Less Design for Attractive Price

The screen content is compressed at the top and bottom of the screen. The unexpected behavior was due to the fact that the screen was installed wrong – apparently deliberately to accommodate all components in a compact housing.

Whether the problem can be solved by software update is unclear. Although OnePlus confirms that the effect occurs, it deliberately avoids the term “problem” – an indication that one should not change the behavior.

In everyday life, however, the effect was barely noticeable. Some apps, such as Twitter or Instagram, showed “jelly scrolling” when scrolling through the feed, but even then you had to pay close attention to it.

To the same extent as in the YouTube video, which has now been clicked more than 600,000 times, the effect could never be reproduced.

In fact, it is a classic case of “what has been seen can not be unseen” – though it is only a trivial matter, it drives the perfectionist inside me insane.

A momentous detail, because apart from that, the AMOLED panel would be more of a strength than a weakness.

The brightness is more than sufficient to recognize the screen content even on bright days. The viewing angle dependency also provides no reason to moan, from steep angles, everything can be recognized unadulterated.

Like many other Chinese manufacturers, the OnePlus 5T in the review has a protective film glued to it – although the screen is already protected from scratches by Gorilla Glass 5.

OnePlus 5T: Hardware and Performance

The OnePlus 5T first impression is one of the first smartphones with an impressive 8GB of RAM. For what? While the Asus ZenFone AR needs the memory for the Augmented Reality sensor Project Tango, the OnePlus 5T has no feature that would occupy so much memory.

OnePlus 5T Review: Professional Bezel-Less Design for Attractive Price

Needless to say, the abundance of RAM is still not. No other smartphone performed multitasking as fast as the OnePlus 5T.

There was no delay when switching between several memory-intensive apps, the apps always remained in the memory and were immediately ready for use.

Also, none of the extra memory is battery-powered, as OnePlus relies on energy-efficient LPDDR4X RAM running at a reduced voltage (0.6 rather than 1.1 volts).

Also beneficial for the multitasking performance: the high-end SoC Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, whose eight cores run at up to 2.45 GHz each.

Even with benchmarks, this clock frequency was hardly maxed out – despite allegations of manipulation in benchmarks.

As with some other manufacturers, the OnePlus 5T is supposed to detect if a benchmark is running and then temporarily boost the performance of the SoC.

The memory is also irritating the currently available technologies. The total of 128GB of internal memory relies on the standard UFS 2.1, which theoretically allows data rates of up to 1200 MB/s.

In terms of performance, the OnePlus 5T in our test is easily on par with the much more expensive competition from Samsung, LG, and HTC, thanks to the RAM-Plus even in some situations.

The support for LTE-Cat12 (maximum 600 Mbps in the download) is currently sufficient. In Austria, using Carrier Aggregation – bundling multiple frequency blocks – in any case only a maximum of 300 Mbps possible, in testing a little more.

OnePlus 5T: Software

The separation of Cyanogen was already done a while ago, meanwhile one develops with Oxygen OS its own Custom ROM on Android basis.

The latest version of the operating system includes some small adjustments that make you stand out from the competition.

So the app Drawer is now hidden in the shortcut bar. If you swipe it up, the list of installed apps will be displayed. In addition, there is now a read mode that turns the screen monochrome and increases the contrast, making it easier to read.

The reading mode can be activated manually or automatically for selected apps. However, there was no measurable advantage in terms of energy consumption.

Furthermore, there is now a “do not disturb” mode for games, which automatically turns off notifications as soon as a game has started – a feature that Samsung users, in particular, have known for a while.

Pleasing: The revised vibration motor now also supports various vibration patterns. A total of five different profiles are available.

In addition, the intensity of incoming calls, notifications, and unrecognized fingerprint can be set individually. Unfortunately, individual apps can still not be assigned an individual vibration profile.

OnePlus 5T: Cameras

Two is better than one: this credo is now followed by several smartphone manufacturers who use two instead of one camera in their flagship models. In addition to Huawei, LG and Apple are now synonymous OnePlus on the unusual combination.

OnePlus 5T Review: Professional Bezel-Less Design for Attractive Price

While LG offers the choice between normal focal length and wide angle, Huawei relies on the combination of monochrome and color sensor.

Apple, however, advertises with “optical” zoom – a feature that should also offer the OnePlus 5T. But the OnePlus 5T cannot offer true optical zoom.

The camera module uses two equally sized Sony sensors (both 1/2.8″ sensor size, 16 and 20-megapixel resolution each), but with different lenses.

OnePlus 5T Review: Professional Bezel-Less Design for Attractive Price

While the 16-megapixel camera has a focal length of 24 mm (f/1.7), the 20-megapixel module has a 36 mm focal length lens (f/2.6).

To enable “optical” zoom, the images from the two cameras are combined – as soon as the 1.6x zoom is selected, the preview simply displays the image of the 20-megapixel camera.

OnePlus 5T Review: Professional Bezel-Less Design for Attractive Price

According to OnePlus co-founder, Carl Pei but is up to “two loss-free zooms” possible. Put simply, the 20-megapixel camera’s image is reduced to 16 megapixels, so it still matches the quality of the main camera.

The zoom is well done, the pictures unfortunately not as good as hoped. While outdoor shots in daylight can score with good details and realistic colors, indoors shots strongly and have washed-out details due to the relatively aggressive filter.

OnePlus 5T Review: Professional Bezel-Less Design for Attractive Price

The effect increases especially in the zoom function since apparently the shots of the bright 16-megapixel sensor are combined with those of the slightly weaker 20-megapixel camera. There is camera module with optical image stabilizer.

In terms of color, the camera produces good results indoors, but a lack of details and visible noise noticeably tarnish the quality.

OnePlus 5T Review: Professional Bezel-Less Design for Attractive Price

Here, however, there is definitely the opportunity to improve. Because the camera app selects in the automatic mode temporarily very aggressive settings, for example, a relatively high ISO value.

OnePlus 5T Review: Professional Bezel-Less Design for Attractive Price

The result: strong noise that is removed from the filter and thus loses detail. Fortunately, the Pro mode works well and allows you to quickly adjust all the important settings, such as ISO value, white balance, exposure time, focus and exposure compensation.

In addition, the recordings can be saved in RAW format. The deep-effect mode, which uses depth information to create an artificial bokeh, has also worked well. That’s the way to make beautiful portraits that are visually reminiscent of DSLR recordings.

OnePlus 5T Review: Professional Bezel-Less Design for Attractive Price

The front camera takes selfies with 16 megapixels (f/2.0) and delivers good results. If you prefer blur, you can quickly hide blemishes with the selfie mode.

Video capture with the main camera has been very successful, it supports 4K and 1080P recordings at 30 frames per second and 1080p videos at 60 fps.

Annoying: Not only the screen is installed upside down, the microphones also take up wrong, so you would have to swap the stereo channels later.

OnePlus 5T: Battery

On board is a 3300mAh strong battery that can not be replaced due to the unibody housing. The battery life of the smartphone is very good, the smartphone was in the test easily through a full day.

OnePlus 5T Review: Professional Bezel-Less Design for Attractive Price

The screen was usually active between five and six hours until the battery was coming to an end.

Unlike other smartphones, the OnePlus 5T has no app that can identify battery recorders. However, there is a power saving mode that reduces power and background data in an emergency.
The smartphone also has a quick charge mode, the so-called “Dash Charge” (5V/4A). This loads the smartphone surprisingly fast, in less than an hour the smartphone was fully charged.

OnePlus 5T Review: Professional Bezel-Less Design for Attractive Price

However, with the Qualcomm Quick Charge standard, which is also supported by many third-party battery packs and chargers, the OnePlus 5T is not compatible.

Another drawback: Dash Charge only works with the included AC adapter and USB cable. If one of the two original components is missing, the fast charging mode can no longer be used.

OnePlus 5T: Conclusions and Reviews

The OnePlus 5T in our review is an excellent smartphone. Thanks to the powerful hardware, the smartphone can still be kept alive for the next five years with the help of custom ROMs, even though the manufacturer has long since stopped setting up official support.

Those who value a high-quality camera should turn to the Huawei P10 in this price range. The monochrome camera allows for unusual photos and the results of the dual camera are excellent.
