Mecool M8S PRO L Review: Serious TV box on Android 7 in 2018

At one time, many of the so-called Android TV boxes went through my desk test-lab, it was often just a clean system from Google with the pre-installed version of Kodi. Of course, there were such gems as Zidoo or WeTek who put on their heads to attract the potential client with additional functionalities.

In today’s review, we will come back to this topic on the example of Mecool M8S PRO L. It is a cheap box that costs just $90 in the Chinese online store GearBest.com.

In summary, the carton contains everything necessary to connect the gadget to the TV.

Mecool M8S PRO L: Design and Appearance

The appearance of the Mecool M8S PRO L in the test is simply plain. Black plastic box with rounded corners and holes for higher temperature. Somehow this plastic is a bit haggard, but it’s just a casing.

The ports are located on two sides (2x USB, HDMI, Ethernet, microSD slot) housing.

The manufacturer’s logo is on the top of the housing. Information about the device status is indicated by a blue LED.

On the bottom you will find the MAC address, the amount of RAM and the FCC identifier, as well as four plastic feet that hide the screws.

The size of the M8S PRO L is small 102 × 102 x 21mm, so you can easily fit it on the shelf under the TV.

Like most devices of this size, the M8S PRO L has passive cooling and is not equipped with a power button. To turn them off completely, you must unplug them from the socket.

Mecool M8S PRO L does not have an SD output such as RCA.

Mecool M8S PRO L: Hardware and Performance

There are several configuration options!

Bearing in mind that it is equipped with Amlogic S912 and 3GB of RAM.

I could not refuse to submit it, although with two performance tests: AnTuTu and Geekbench 4. Below you can see the results that are okay in this price range.

We connect Mecool M8S PRO L in our analisis to the network in two ways: using WiFi 2.4G / 5G or 100Mbps Ethernet port.

Of course, as a multimedia device, it was also equipped with Bluetooth 4.1 to be able to connect any accessories.

Mecool M8S PRO L: Software

This gadget in our review works under the control of Android 7.1. Rom is stable and has 32GB. The proprietary launcher used is simple but functional.

The user can create a list of favorite programs that will appear just above the clock. There are no more setting options, which is bad luck.

The manufacturer decided to install several applications. Among other things, we will find TV Center (fork Kodi in version 17.0 with pre-installed questionable add-ons), Netflix, AirPin PRO.

Some of them can simply be uninstalled – if we feel such a need. The most annoying fact of this set are two unknown applications that hang all the time in the notification bar.

In our test of Mecool M8S PRO L has 32GB of built-in memory for data, of which approximately 10GB is occupied by the system. Of course, you can expand the place by inserting an additional microSD card (max 32GB) in the slot or connect an external drive to one of the two USB ports.

Mecool M8S PRO L: Practice

M8S PRO L in the test does not have a power button, so connecting the device to the mains electricity causes it to start.

System start takes about 22 seconds, so quite tolerable. By clicking the “standby” button on the remote control, the image for the HDMI port will be turned off only.

Every day I use the WeTek Hub box, which works well, although after the last update it has a big problem with overheating.

Most of my test samples have been reproduced without any problem, including 4K H.265. It turned out to be troublesome 4K 60FPS H.264 and strangely 1080p Hi10p.

The sound transmission (Passthrough) via HDMI works properly.

I tested the tests on the latest version of Kodi 17.4 available in the Google Play market.

Netflix’s cool production will be very disappointed, however, because the latest application from this content provider is not compatible with MECOOL M8S Pro L in this review.

I had to look for an older APK to start Netflix. After installation and logging, the videos played back, but only in SD resolution, because the device does not have the appropriate certificates.

The remote control attached to the set works on infrared and, as for a cheap Chinese, it is made quite well.

It has all the key buttons for Android, mouse mode and can even learn the signals of other pilots. For example, you can control the TV volume, or even turn it on using only the MECOOL remote control.

However, I am used to my worn-out Mele F10 Deluxe, which I reviewed almost three years ago and I do not intend to use any more.

MECOOL M8S Pro L: Conclusions and Reviews

Overall, I am very happy with the operation of this device and its stability. Most of the tested multimedia files have been recreated without any problems for MECOOL M8S Pro L.

In addition, in this price segment, we will not get such an efficient device equipped with 3GB RAM and Amlogic S912 processor, which will manage to run most of the games available on Google Play.

Also, we can watch Netflix in HD or 4K, which has become very popular in our country, so it’s a good news.

Ultimately, for less than $90, we’ll get a good multimedia player.
