As you understand from the title of the article, today in the review I have branded wireless earbuds JBL Tune 220 TWS. If anyone else does not know, then at present the JBL brand belongs to the Samsung division.
Many of you have wired headphones or wireless speakers from JBL, and now I will talk about new wireless earbuds. In this article, I will share with you my emotions about the sound quality, and also talk about the disadvantages and advantages.
You can now buy your JBL Tune 220 TWS wireless earbuds for about $115. Of course, the price is not small at all and the manufacturer should try very hard to surprise me.
The main features include – 12 mm dynamic driver, support for AAC and SBC codecs, as well as good build quality and materials used.
At the moment, the Tune 220 TWS earbuds look pretty and stylish, but from a technical point of view, they are very weak. But let’s take it in order.

JBL Tune 220 TWS: Unboxing
JBL branded wireless earbuds come in a bright box. Where on the front part are earbuds with a charging case and also the main features.
When I first opened the box, I was very disappointed. Namely, the presence of a Micro USB port. How is it possible to use a Micro USB connection in 2020, and the price of earbuds is generally not budgetary. I tested the wireless earbuds for $25 and there was already a Type-C connection. JBL simply decided to save one dollar on its customers with Micro USB connections.
In general, the equipment is not rich and inside the box, I found earbuds, a charging case, and instructions.
JBL Tune 220 TWS: Design
JBL offers several color options for the new wireless earbuds. For example, white, gray, blue, pink and black colors – so a wide selection will be available to the user.
The earbuds themselves are built on a platform like the Apple AirPods, but the dimensions of the JBL Tune 220 TWS are slightly larger. The dimensions of one earbud were 44 x 20 x 20 mm, and the weight was about 4.9 grams.
Indeed, the dimensions are too big and in the ears do not look very harmonious. But despite this – they sit well, and their low weight allows you to wear wireless earbuds for a long period of time. In my case, I heard music, watched a movie without stopping for about 2.5 hours and my ears did not feel any fatigue.
By the way, I did not find any information on protection against water. Therefore, the JBL Tune 220 TWS is not intended for sports, but only for everyday use. Naturally, it is impossible to wet or bathe in them.
On the outside of the earbuds is a physical rubberized button. The manufacturer did not do touch control, well, maybe this is for the best. The button presses are always clear and accidental clicks are not found. When switching tracks, when the earbuds are in the ears, there was no pressure on the ear canal, which is very good!
At the bottom, there are three charging connectors and a microphone hole. LEDs are present, but during music playback, they do not flicker every 5-7 seconds.
The charging case is made of the same matte plastic as the earbuds themselves. But the dimensions are quite large, as are the earbuds themselves.
The weight of the case without earbuds was about 47 grams. Of course, you can put it in your jeans pocket, but the box will stick out a little.
The build quality of the box is at a decent level, here you can find a metal hinge for opening the lid, LED indicators for the charge level and Micro USB port.
I already spoke out for Micro USB connections, so I won’t be upset. It was appropriate to recall that the European Parliament voted for a single Type-C connector standard for all devices in 2020. Therefore, headphones or smartphones with a Micro USB port that were released in 2020 will have big problems.
JBL Tune 220 TWS: Connection and Control
The wireless connection is used Bluetooth 5.0, and the codecs are AAC and SBC. Of course, I would like to see the aptX codec in JBL Tune 220 TWS, but the manufacturer decided not to indulge its customers.
In general, the quality of communication is at a good level. I did not have strong interruptions and the signal was stable throughout the whole day. As for the delays, there are practically no delays, even while playing a shooter.
To turn on the earbuds, you must press any button for about 2 seconds. To switch to pairing mode, hold for 5 seconds on the right earbud. The earbud off – hold for 5 seconds on any channel.
By control, the left earbud responds to switching tracks. For example, a single tap is the next track, and a double-tap is the previous track. Right earbud, one press – play/pause and also accept/hung up. Double-clicking on the right – calls the voice assistant. Of the minuses, there is no volume control function in the control.
JBL Tune 220 TWS: Sound
As I mentioned at the beginning of the review, the JBL Tune 220 TWS is equipped with a 12 mm dynamic driver. However, competitors have a 14 mm driver in their execution.
The low frequencies are very muddy, the bass is present, but they are deaf. There is almost no detail. The mid and high frequencies have a similar history as low frequencies. Therefore, the sound quality of the JBL Tune 220 TWS is quite low, especially when the price is higher than $ 100. Yes, I can’t say that it has a terrible sound quality, it is comparable to earbuds with a price tag of about $ 60. Do you need to overpay at the same time?
The quality of the microphone is average, it is not bad and not perfect. In quiet places, the interlocutor will hear you well, and in loud – a little worse.
JBL Tune 220 TWS: Battery
The manufacturer did not even stand on ceremony and installed a battery with a capacity of 22 mAh in each earbud. The battery life at maximum volume was about 2.5 hours.
The indicator is very modest even for budget headphones, and we do not have a budget device at all. Why did you need to make such a large earbud size if the battery capacity is very small and the diameter of the membrane is smaller than that of competitors?
The charging box received 410 mAh capacity. Thanks to the case, you can recharge the earbuds about 4 times. The total battery life will be 13 hours with a charging case.
The earbuds of charging time will be about 2 hours via Micro USB port.
JBL Tune 220 TWS: Conclusion and Reviews
After several days of testing the JBL Tune 220 TWS, I was left with negative emotions.
Certainly, the earbuds received pleasant matte plastic and build quality at a high level. Also, I want to remind you that the mechanical control button has a good response, there are almost no delays, and the communication quality is at a decent level.
For me, two indicators remain the most important – it’s convenience and sound quality. In this case, with the Tune 220 TWS, wearing earbuds was not a problem for my ears, but the sound quality was very disappointing.
The same goes for battery life, lack of active noise reduction, aptX codec and Type-C port for charging.
