Huawei AX3 Pro Review: Sixth Generation Wi-Fi Router for $80

Just last week, I tested the new Wi-Fi 6 router from Xiaomi, which showed itself on the positive side. Today, I have a direct competitor for Xiaomi on the test – this is the Huawei brand with its updated router – Huawei AX3 Pro.

I want to note right away that I really liked the device in terms of work, the speed is just at its best, but you can find out more in the detailed review below.

As for the price tag for the Huawei AX3 Pro, it is slightly lower than the Xiaomi Mi AIoT Router AX3600 model and is currently lower than $80.

The main features of the new Wi-Fi 6 router I can attribute are the updated processor from Gigahome, which allows you to develop fast speed. The device also supports high bandwidth with a frequency of 160 MHz. Four antennas are installed onboard, which amplify the signal for transmitting data over long distances.

Let me tell you all the advantages and disadvantages of the new generation Wi-Fi 6 router and begin my review with a complete set.

Unboxing

The router comes in a rather large box. The box itself is pretty solid, so worry about shipping from China. The device came to be safe and sound.

The front side of the box displays a picture of a router with a name and has a company logo. On the back of the box are all the main features, but since the device is designed for the Chinese market, it will be problematic to figure out the specs.

Inside the box, I found out that the router itself is in a protective transport package, there is also a 24W power adapter and instructions. Of course, the instruction is also in Chinese, but you should not worry right away since it is easy to connect and easy to control, but more on that later.

I was surprised at the high power of the adapter, but I assume that the device is quite productive due to the built-in quad-core processor. I want to note that there is no additional Ethernet cable included.

Design

I note right away that the dimensions of the new generation of the Huawei AX3 Pro router are much more compact than the Xiaomi Mi AIoT Router AX3600. To be honest, I like the look of Huawei more than Xiaomi.

But the weight of the AX3 Pro router is pretty decent – about 400 grams. The weight of the device is much more than the corresponding routers of a similar size.

The case of the router is made of black matte plastic, which is well wear-resistant to scratches and other troubles.

Four built-in antennas are folding and if you have limited space you can fold them and not worry about the quality of the signal. Naturally, the router has two ranges and thus two antennas are responsible for the 2.4 GHz frequency, and the other two for the 5.0 GHz frequency.

On the upper part, there is a round power button and there is a sticker with the NFC symbol for wireless connection. This means that you can automatically connect the router via a smartphone without any problems.

The reverse side of the Huawei AX3 Pro received one WAN port and three LAN ports with a hole for the power supply and a reset button. In general, the number of ports corresponds to that of most modern Wi-Fi 6 routers.

The lower part of the case has a sticker with the main technical features and here you can find holes for additional cooling of the device.

The new AX3 Pro router not only looks pretty interesting but also well-assembled and the materials used are up to standard. Let’s talk a little about the main technical features and functions.

Functions

First of all, it is worth noting that the device is built on the basis of a new generation of Wi-Fi 6, which provides the best signal quality and high data transfer speed.

In addition, the router received support for OFDMA technology, which allows you to transfer data to multiple devices at the same time.

Inside the device, a quad-core Gigahome processor with a clock frequency of 1.4 GHz is used. Huawei AX3 Pro is able to connect up to 128 devices simultaneously on two operating ranges.

The built-in frequency band of 1024-QAM and 160 MHz, the router has the ability to develop a maximum speed of up to 574 Mbit/s in the 2.4 GHz band and 2402 Mbit/s in the 5 GHz band. As the router will show itself in practice, I will tell you a little later.

It is also worth noting that the router has good protection thanks to the support of the Trusted Execution Environment and Microkernel. Thus, all transmitted data will be qualitatively protected both at the software and hardware level.

An important parameter is the availability of CC EAL5 certification. Therefore, you can use the new AX3 Pro model in a commercial environment without being afraid of the threat of connected devices.

Connection

There are two methods to connect a router to your provider – this is through the HUAWEI AI Life mobile application or in the standard way through a line in a browser on a laptop or PC.

The first method is quite simple and not complicated. After installing the mobile application, you just need to bring the smartphone to the NFC place and the router automatically detected it.

The second method is also not complicated, after entering the IP address in the browser, you will need to go through several steps. This is to enter the password of the router system and come up with your password for both 2.4 and 5.0 GHz networks. Then you can use the device for both home and office purposes.

Naturally, the Chinese version of the firmware is a big minus. Thus, all settings and functions will also be in Chinese. But do not worry, because if you use a Chrome browser, you can translate the language into your own.

The main settings menu is pretty standard as for most routers and you can choose automatic connection settings or enter all IP addresses, channels manually.

You can see that I have the Wi-Fi 6 function turned on and therefore I suggest moving on to testing the speed.

Speed test

I installed a router in the farthest room of my apartment. In front of me are three walls and two doors and the distance was about 10 meters.

Huawei AX3 Pro Review: Sixth Generation Wi-Fi Router for $80

In the first test, I want to check the speed through a LAN cable, to make sure that the router supports 1 GB data transfer speed. Indeed, this is a 1 GB port, which received a speed of about 800 Mbit/s download and about 750 Mbit/s upload. The performance at the moment is slightly better than the Xiaomi Mi AIoT Router AX3600.

After that, I connected my flagship smartphone OnePlus 8 to the Wi-Fi 6 network and the test results are pretty good. This is 480 Mbit/s for download and almost 500 Mbit/s for upload.

Huawei AX3 Pro Review: Sixth Generation Wi-Fi Router for $80

All the above results were carried out on a range of 5.0 GHz, now I want to check the range of 2.4 GHz since most TV boxes or budget devices support only this range.

Of course, through OnePlus 8 with a 2.4 GHz frequency, it does not show such a strong result. This is up to 100 Mbit/s download and upload about 170 Mbit/s.

Conclusion and Reviews

After testing the speed and quality of the signal, I was impressed by the new Huawei AX3 Pro router.

Huawei AX3 Pro Review: Sixth Generation Wi-Fi Router for $80

This is a promising device that shows good speed results, both at 2.4, that and at 5.0 GHz operating frequency.

As for competitors, the Huawei AX3 Pro has every chance to surpass even the flagship router from Xiaomi, which we tested last week.

In terms of technological features and functions, everything suits me. There is, of course, a minor minus – this is the Chinese language, but as you can see it is easily solved through a translator in the browser.

Price and Where to buy cheaper?
