Recently, the MediaTek company has begun to gain its popularity in the segment of flagship devices. Today I want to share with you my experience of using a new productive smartphone called Honor V40.

Naturally, as you might have guessed, the new smartphone model from the Honor brand uses the flagship Dimensity 1000+ processor. Therefore, in this detailed review, I will focus on performance tests and benchmarks.

In addition, the Honor V40 received a number of interesting features. For example, this is a large 6.72 inch AMOLED screen, 8 GB of RAM and 128 or 256 GB of internal memory. I was also very pleased with the 4000 mAh battery with very fast charging at 66 watts of power.

Unsurprisingly, the new Honor V40 has a $700 price tag as a true flagship device. But is it worth overpaying for such features or can you still buy a device from the Xiaomi brand? Let’s find out what a smartphone from Honor is capable of in real life.

Unboxing and packaging

The flagship device Honor V40 comes in a regular and non-wow-inducing package. This is a standard box, which is made of durable white cardboard. On the front, there is only the name of the company Honor, its model and the logo of support for the 5G network.

I have a Chinese version of the device on the test, so you can see Chinese characters on the side faces. But this is not a big problem, as many other languages will be available in the smartphone settings. This is not Xiaomi, which with the Chinese firmware only has two languages - Chinese and English.

Inside the box, I found another small box with a protective transparent silicone case, instructions in Chinese and a sim needle. A little below the smartphone itself is located in a protective transport film. And under the main device in separate grooves lay a Type-C charging cable and a power adapter with a power of 66 watts.

In addition, I can note that the Honor V40 also has 50W wireless charging. But I will talk about the charging time and battery life a little later. Now I propose to talk about the build quality and the materials used.

Design, assembly and materials

The surprising moment when I first took a smartphone in my hands was its compact size and weight. I know the screen size was big at 6.72 inches, but the dimensions are 163.1 x 74.3 x 8 mm and weighs 189 grams – similar to devices with a screen size of 6.3 inches. Therefore, it was convenient to hold a smartphone in hand even for a long time and not very uncomfortable.

As for the case, the Honor V40 is made entirely of glass, both on the front and back of the device. In this case, the body frame is made of metal alloy. Indeed, this combination of materials not only looks beautiful in hand feel, but also proves its premium flagship look.

In terms of the quality of performance, everything is also at a high level. For example, when twisting the body of a smartphone, I did not hear extraneous creaks and noises. In general, the build quality is at a decent level and this is not surprising, the price is still not the smallest.

On the back of the device, you can see a rather large, slightly protruding main camera module. It uses three sensors and has an LED flash and laser autofocus.

The manufacturer offers three color options – black, blue and peach. Each option is unique and has an interesting iridescent shade. I can also note about the mirror surface on the right side of the main camera module.

To the right of the screen, you can see the power button and the volume rocker. Meanwhile, the bottom end received a cutout for a speaker, a microphone hole, a Type-C port for charging and a slot for dual nano SIM cards. But according to the manufacturer, in the next update, one of the dual slots can be used for a nano SD card. Therefore, there is currently no memory card slot.

On the top of the Honor V40, there are holes for the earpiece, there are also holes for the stereo speaker, but there is no notification LED.

Thus, I can draw conclusions regarding the design of the new flagship device from Honor. Indeed, this is a real flagship smartphone, as the V40 model received not only a unique look, but also made of premium materials. Like almost any flagship, you won’t find a 3.5mm headphone jack and memory card slot here.

Screen and image quality

Unsurprisingly, the flagship Honor V40 smartphone uses a 6.72-inch large AMOLED screen. But I wanted to point out that the display resolution is not quite typical – 1236 x 2676 pixels. This is somewhere between 2K and 1080p, but I wonder how this resolution will show itself in games or other applications.

The side ends of the screen were rounded by about 80 degrees. Therefore, it seems that the screen looks without borders at all. But at the bottom and top, there is a small frame. Also in the upper left corner you can see an oval cutout for the front camera.

In general, the screen to body ratio was 91.1%. This value is very good, and few devices have such a percentage of usable occupied area. An optical fingerprint scanner is located under the screen, which works quite quickly and accurately.

At the same time, I have no special comments on the quality of the displayed picture. Colors look very realistic and vivid. In addition, the screen received many interesting features such as HDR10 and 120Hz refresh rate.

The latter feature allows for ultra-light touch control not only in the user interface, but also during games. The maximum brightness of the screen was 800 nits. This will allow you to use the device even in bright and sunny weather.

Performance, benchmarks, games and OS

I already said at the beginning of the review that the flagship smartphone Honor V40 uses a 7nm processor technology with eight cores. This processor was named Dimensity 1000+ and was created by Mediatek.

Honor V40 Review: Flagship Giant with MediaTek Processor

The exact same processor is already used on many devices in the Chinese market, such as the Redmi K30 Ultra, Vivo iQOO Z1 and Realme X7 Pro. At the same time, the price tag for these smartphones was about $400, and not $700, like the model from Honor.

Yes, I have nothing against the new Dimensity 1000+ processor, but for some reason the price tag for the V40 smartphone model is quite high. Therefore, the manufacturer Honor has to do something about it so that they have corresponding sales. Below I will leave an album with various benchmark tests such as AnTuTu, GeekBench 5 and others.

The graphics accelerator Mali-G77 MC9 is responsible for the gaming abilities. It showed itself on the positive side, as even demanding games were launched without much difficulty on ultra-high graphics settings. But with prolonged use, the smartphone warmed up a little in the hands. Thus, you cannot play for a long time for about half an hour per session.

In terms of internal memory, everything is not so bad here either, the Honor V40 uses 8 GB of RAM and 128 or 256 GB of internal memory in UFS 2.1 format. As for everyday use, the amount of memory will be enough. But there is no additional slot for a memory card here, and this is a significant drawback for most users, including me.

Wirelessly, everything is fine here too. Since this is a modern practically flagship smartphone, the manufacturer has installed Wi-Fi with support for the sixth generation inside the case. There is also a Bluetooth 5.1 version, a fast GPS module and even an NFC module for contactless payment.

Honor V40 Review: Flagship Giant with MediaTek Processor

As for the operating system, the Honor V40 runs Android 10 with Magic UI 4.0. I think that Honor will update the OS to version 11 soon, as most manufacturers have already done. During my test, I didn’t have much trouble using the Magic UI.

But the lack of any Google services and applications may become a disadvantage. I think you know that Honor has some problems with Google, as does Huawei. The V40 has its own online store for applications and games. Therefore, I have not had any major problems using the user interface without Google applications.

Camera and sample photos

The main feature of any smartphone is its camera performance. I know that most users focus on photo quality more than even CPU performance. Therefore, Honor V40 uses a triple main camera and let’s talk in more detail about each of them.

Honor V40 Review: Flagship Giant with MediaTek Processor

The first Sony IMX766 sensor has a 50-megapixel resolution with ƒ/1.9 aperture. It is a powerful state-of-the-art camera module that delivers incredible performance in detail, brightness and color, both in the daytime and at night.

The second module is designed for ultra-wide images and has a resolution of 8 megapixels with an f/2.4 aperture and a 120-degree capture angle. The third last camera module is used for macro mode with a resolution of 2 megapixels. Naturally, you can see examples of photos of all modes in the album below.

For anyone interested, the main camera is capable of shooting video at 4K resolution and 30 frames per second with gyro-EIS. It also has many modes, including slow-moving.

The front camera has a sensor with 16-megapixel resolution and f/2.0 aperture. Next to the selfie camera, there is a color spectrum sensor, which makes selfies even brighter and better.

Battery and run time

Another important parameter when choosing a smartphone is battery capacity and fast charging. If the battery capacity on the Honor V40 is not the highest – 4000 mAh, then the charging time really surprised me.

Honor V40 Review: Flagship Giant with MediaTek Processor

As I said, a 66 W power adapter is supplied in the package bundle. Therefore, a full charge from 0 to 100% took me just 37 minutes. This is very fast and I am glad that manufacturers do not stand in one place and produce such fast charges.

In addition, fast wireless charging with a power of 50 watts is available in the smartphone. If you use wireless charging, then in 40 minutes you can charge the device to about 50%.

Honor V40 Review: Flagship Giant with MediaTek Processor

When it comes to battery life, there is nothing surprising on the Honor V40. For example, with aggressive use, the smartphone will work for one working day, and with an average load – about 1.5-2 days.

Conclusion, reviews, pros and cons

The Honor V40 is another flagship smartphone with superior technical features and specifications, including performance and camera. Also, I liked the fast charging feature thanks to the 66W adapter.

Of course, I cannot pass by the excellent appearance, good workmanship and build quality. The body is also made of real premium material – protected glass.

Of the other positive aspects, I can attribute – this is a good quality of pictures, both daytime and at night. The device is equipped with the latest wireless technology. That is, Wi-Fi 6, NFC, and even support for 5G networks.

But the main and most critical drawback is cost. For example, competitors with a similar processor have a price tag that is 30-40% cheaper. Therefore, the main question remains whether the smartphone is worth your attention or not?

Price and where to buy cheaper?

Of course, I cannot recommend buying a new smartphone model from Honor, since the price tag at the start of sales is quite high.

You can currently purchase the base version Honor V40 with 8GB/128GB storage for $699.99. If the price is $ 50-200 less, then the device will definitely be worth your attention.
