Hawkeye FIREFLY 8 Review: Specific Action Camera with 4K 2018

In 2015 I was able to test the first version of the Hawkeye FIREFLY 6S. At that time, the very cheap camera still had to make do with a maximum of 2K recordings and no display.

With the Hawkeye FIREFLY 8 Action Camera in our review, the Chinese manufacturer Hawkeye Technology is now starting a campaign against the top camera: the GoPro Hero 5 Black Edition.

With its dimensions of 59.5 x 41 x 21.5 mm, it is quite handy. However, the 170° lens with an aperture f/2.8 on the front is clearly out of the case.

The weight of 88 grams is also acceptable. On the back you will find a 2.0-inch screen protected by Corning Gorilla Glass.

On the top you will find a speaker and the two microphones for sound recording.

Hawkeye FIREFLY 8: Features and Video quality

The Hawkeye FIREFLY 8 Action Camera in the test relies on a Sony IMX117 with 12 megapixels. The 1/2.0 inch sensor is relatively bright. The lens with 170 degrees is of course designed as a wide angle.

The resulting curvature can be neutralized by the software. An Novatek NTK96660 video processor is available.

The Hawkeye FIREFLY 8 offers a total of nine different modes. A combination of gyroscope sensor and acceleration sensor provides for halfway shake-free shots.

However, this is only up to 2K recordings available. The two microphones allow an appealing sound recording.

The 4K recordings are recorded at a maximum of 25 frames per second (PAL) and are of very high quality.

The color reproduction is very natural. In addition to the 4K videos, the camera can also record slow motion in HD at up to 240 frames per second. Photos snaps the camera with 12 megapixels (4: 3) or 8 megapixels in 16: 9.

The image quality can also convince. It definitely does not need to hide behind the – sometimes more expensive – competition.

Hawkeye FIREFLY 8: Battery

The Hawkeye FIREFLY 8 in the analisis has 1400mAh strong battery allow almost 2 hours of video recording in 4K.

Hawkeye FIREFLY 8: Conclusions and Reviews

The Hawkeye FIREFLY 8 Actioncam in our reviews is certainly worth every penny with its $90. The large display on the back facilitates the operation very much.

The video processor does not overheat and the 4K video is actually recorded at 25 frames per second and not interpolated. Qualitatively, it is even superior to the FIREFLY 8 4K Action Camera in 2018.

  1. What is the latest version? Mine came with Firefly_1229 as it is displayed in the settings menu. I get a strip of pixelation on the top and bottom portion of the screen when Gyro is turned off and using a Gimbal. I have no problems with other action cameras at this setting.
