DOOGEE Y8: Unboxing and Packaging
Currently, DOOGEE Y8 can only be ordered from China. DOOGEE has a similar box as the previous model Y7 Plus with the same design.
Inside the box, we found the following accessories: a charging cable and a power adapter, a phone with a protective film already installed on the screen and instructions in English.
As for its price, you should not expect more, but the phone has good equipment.
DOOGEE Y8: Design and Appearance
The design in the new DOOGEE Y8 has all the modern trends like the flagship phones.
On the front of the set a large screen with a size of 6.1 inches, on top of the waterdrop notch for the front camera.
On the back, we see a plastic cover with two horizontal cameras like the iPhone X, a LED flash and a fingerprint scanner in the center.
In our hands, the phone looks very attractive and stylish, and in fact, it is a very high-quality smartphone for everyday tasks.
The phone itself looks quite good, which is manifested in the feeling of fairly low weight. The dimensions of the smartphone DOOGEE Y8 in the test are 156.8 x 75.25 x 9.0 mm and weight is 150 grams.
However, feel and handling is definitely higher than that of other competitors.
The case is slightly rounded and reminds me a bit of the Huawei Mate 10.
On the left side there is a power button and volume rocker, and on the right side, there is a slot for SIM and microSD cards.
The speaker and micro USB charging port are located on the bottom and the headphone jack is on the top.
In general, the design of DOOGEE Y8 as for a budget phone looks modern and stylish in our analisis.
DOOGEE Y8: Display
DOOGEE Y8 has a fairly large 6.1-inch HD screen with a resolution of 1280 x 600 pixels. At first glance, this seems to be small, but for everyday use, I had enough.
The brightness and contrast correspond to IPS panels.
The maximum brightness is quite high 400 NIT and even on a sunny day, you can use the phone without problems.
It is worth noting that the aspect ratio is 19: 9 and there is a waterdrop notch, the frontal part is almost completely occupied by the screen. But the frames around the DOOGEE Y8 display are not minimal, but this should have been expected from a smartphone with a price tag of $ 90.
DOOGEE Y8: Hardware and Performance
DOOGEE Y8 in the test uses the MediaTek MT6739 quad-core processor in combination with 3GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory.
This sounds quite relevant for a smartphone in this price range. First, let’s look at some of the tests on the DOOGEE Y8 below.
Fortunately, on the smartphone DOOGEE Y8, the user interface works very smoothly and well. Delays in testing, we did not find.
Even the most basic applications, such as WhatsApp, web browser, Facebook, etc., work well.
As for classic or arcade games, the phone copes well. But newer and more complex 3D games like Asphalt 9 cannot be played smoothly.
Most of the heavy 3D games work, but with minimal graphics requirements.
The positive thing is the presence of Wi-Fi and a fairly high-speed GPS signal.
What surprises me is the lack of a notification indicator. It is always very important for Asian manufacturers.
In principle, I would call daily use positive because of the good performance of the smartphone for its price. And I would note the fairly good and stable operation of the latest version of the Android 9.0 operating system.
DOOGEE Y8: Software
When you first turn on the DOOGEE Y8 smartphone, you get directly to the home screen of the new Android 9.0 Pie operating system.
If you want to use your smartphone with a Google account or connect to Wi-Fi, you must do it manually in the settings.
The language can also be changed to English, translation in parts is good and it is sufficient for full use.
Like previous models of smartphones from the DOOGEE line, you have a very bright and rich user interface design.
If you do not like the home screen, you can simply install another Launcher, for example, Google Now Launcher or Nova Launcher from Play Store, and you will have a “standard” Android smartphone.
Fortunately, DOOGEE Y8 in our test does not have any pre-installed apps. In addition to standard applications, nothing else can be found on a smartphone, even though thanks for that.
Of the 16 GB of internal memory, you will be available about 10.5 GB of free space. If this is not enough, you can easily install a memory card up to 128 GB.
DOOGEE Y8 has some extra features. These include various gestures, such as double-tapping to turn on the display, wipe your fingers XYZ to launch a previously selected application, and so on.
DOOGEE Y8: Sound
Let’s start with the quality of the phone calls. The conversational speaker may be a bit boring, but mostly suitable for everyday use. The built-in microphone is reliable if there were not too many background sounds during our testing.
The quality of the main speaker is completely in order. Yes, the DOOGEE Y8 is not the loudest speaker, but the sound is still quite clear and has an average volume.
The sound sounds clear and clean, bass, of course, difficult to meet. However, you can easily watch videos on YouTube.
DOOGEE Y8: Camera
The dual camera from the DOOGEE Y8 is widely advertised by the manufacturer. It is obvious that many modern high-end smartphones have dual cameras.
Dual cameras in smartphones have different concepts. For example, Apple and LG rely on two cameras with different focal lengths to enlarge a photo at 2x without loss of quality.
Huawei uses two cameras in which images are compared with each other, and higher quality photos are created.
The oldest concept that I first saw on old HTC devices is a dual camera for blurring the background.
Usually, smartphones combine a good sensor and a slightly less weak sensor. A good sensor creates an image, and a bad one creates blurriness of the background.
The latter concept is also used in the DOOGEE Y8 in our analisis, where the main camera is 8-megapixels and the secondary camera is 5-megapixels.
The second camera is a look like a fake, as it does not provide background blur in automatic mode. But this does not mean that the camera is not good.
Let’s look at some test images below. They were not processed by post-processing and are created automatically.
If you look at the photos, you will understand why I mean that no one will take “portrait photos” with this smartphone.
Even for a $90 smartphone, image quality will be moderate. The photos look pretty boring and lifeless.
DOOGEE Y8: Battery
With a battery capacity of 3400 mAh, the DOOGEE Y8 smartphone will provide good battery life.
In my usual test of using the phone in social networks, light games, browsing the web, etc., with average display brightness, the DOOGEE Y8 worked for only 6.5 hours.
Unfortunately, this is not so much! High-quality smartphones or models with a more capacitive battery can easily work for 7-10 hours.
If you set the maximum display brightness, then you can count about 5 hours.
As for the daily use of this autonomy will be enough for one working day. With a display with a resolution of 720p and the Android 9.0 operating system will ensure you stable battery life for one day.
If you are looking for a smartphone with long battery life, then it is worth considering other options.
DOOGEE Y8: Conclusions and Reviews
In fact, DOOGEE Y8 is a good budget smartphone, which has its advantages and disadvantages in our review.
But let’s start with positive things. The case is excellent, the display is very good, and the software is also reliable.
In addition, the performance of the smartphone outside the games is amazingly flawless. Unfortunately, the camera is negative. The dual camera function does not meet the requirements and in fact, the second sensor is fake.
If the camera is not very important to you on a smartphone, then DOOGEE Y8 can be worth my recommendations. In addition, the smartphone offers a pretty good bundle with good performance for its price.
DOOGEE Y8: Price and Where to buy cheaper?
Now you can order and buy a DOOGEE Y8 smartphone at an interesting price for only $89.99 at a 25% discount.
As for a budget smartphone, this is a good option to get a modern and stylish phone with the appearance of top manufacturers, but with a minimum price tag.
