The rugged smartphones are becoming increasingly popular, as many Chinese manufacturers have recognized.
Here the market is still very open and can also be used well by smaller companies. One of them, the manufacturer Doogee, for many no stranger to the industry, but well established with solid smartphones.
Some time ago, the two rugged smartphones S30 and S60 appeared. Both cover different price ranges. But today, we have the new generation of Doogee S70 in our review.

Doogee S70: Desing and Appearance
Externally, the Doogee S70 stands out clearly from the S60. Everything looks much sturdier processed.
The back is made of a mix of metal and plastic with light rubber. This looks extremely high quality.
Above is a single-lens camera from Sony IMX363 with 12-megapixels, second 5-megapixel sensors, and a two-color flash.
The camera, unlike the S60, was placed flush and framed by a slightly protruding ring.
Under the camera, the SIM slot is housed under a “maintenance flap” which must be opened with the supplied flat-head screwdriver.
On the left side, there are 2 SIM card slots and a SLot for the MicroSD card. This design is extremely unusual because the SIM cards are placed one above the other inside the slot.
The fingerprint sensor is mounted on the back panel. Doogee also advertises the cordless shop, the so-called Qi charging system.
This device is clearly marked on the back with a symbol, a prerequisite is a corresponding charging mat, here you must necessarily read, not all are compatible with the S70.
Doogee deviates slightly from the standard. Below two speakers are housed, which are clearly visible through the slots.
On the left side of the case (seen from the display side), there is a one-key game mode button.
On the right side are volume rocker buttons as well as the power button. These additional keys can be configured in the settings.
The same also applies at the bottom for the USB Type-C connector. The front is equipped with a 5.99-inch FullHD Plus display, above it is the ear speaker and the camera.
The whole device looks very powerful, with 278 grams and no lightweight but it should also cover a wide range of buyers are not interested in fragile toys but looking for a device that supports them in the working life.
I also wanted to note that you can additionally order a game controller. This is a good device for those who like to play games.
Doogee S70: Display
The 5.99-inch display dissolves with 2160×1080 pixels, is razor-sharp and has a very natural color reproduction.
Beautiful is the customizable brightness even in direct sunlight. The display is protected by Gorilla Glass version 5, so it is extremely resistant even in extreme situations.
Unlike the S60, the display can be easily operated even in damp conditions. 10 touch points are supported.
By the way: Thanks to MiraVison you can adjust the display to your color idea, a great feature!
Doogee S70: Hardware and Performance
Doogee S70 in the test relies on the Helio P23, a mid-range processor with 8 A53 cores, 4 of which clock at 1.6 GHz, the other 4 with 2.5 GHz.
At the side of the processor is the ARM Mali-G71 MP2 GPU with 1 GHz clock rate as well as 6 GB LPDDR4x RAM, this one is really fast with 4.33 GB/s, you did not skip Doogee.
To save data and apps, 64 GB of internal memory are available as well as the ability to insert a MicroSD card without sacrificing the Dual-Sim capability.
The read/write speed of the internal memory is around 282/182 MB/s, a good value!
Doogee S70: Software
Doogee relies on the somewhat dusty Android 8.0 with its own launcher and some adjustments.
There are many special features available, including the SOS feature, gestures in sleep mode, 3-finger screenshot or the option of one-hand operation.
This opens a menu with functions that can be easily operated with one hand. Very helpful Doogee S70!
The adjustments are quite impressive, but they are very useful. It remains to be hoped that Doogee S70 delivers updates and not neglected the great smartphone.
Doogee S70: Camera
Doogee S70 in our analisis has built a very great sensor from Sony, the IMX363. This sensor comes among other phones and triggers with 12-megapixels and an open aperture of f/1.8.
From the quality, he does not come close to a Samsung Galaxy S9, but the sensor produces very nice photos.
Unfortunately, the included camera app is a bit botched, here offer the alternative to. Saving to RAW is not possible.
Focusing and shutter speed are neatly fast and the photos are sufficiently sharp with good color rendition. An optical image stabilizer is available but this needs a steady hand, so something botched.
For selfie photographers, a 5-megapixel sensor from Samsung is at your side. The photos produced are quite handsome but not an absolute highlight.
Doogee S70: Connections
Doogee does not give up any amenities on the S70 in the review. All frequencies/bands are supported.
The built-in WLAN module supports all new standards. It sparks in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz range with the standards a / b / g / n.
For friends of Bluetooth headphones or wireless transmission, Bluetooth 4.x is available. An exact version is not known, because my Bluetooth headphones work only with the version 4.0, I strongly assume that this information is correct. Also, NFC is supported easily.
Of course, the obligatory GPS receiver may not be missing on a smartphone to know where you are even in the field.
The location is speedy and very accurate, a navigation in the car or outdoors on trekking tours is nothing in the way. Other features include gyroscope, compass and fingerprint sensor.
Doogee S70: Sound
This is a bit better on the speakers than the S60 but also no great achievement. Heights are reproduced well, the bass is completely lost and it seems tinny.
There is no the 3.5mm jack, you can not connect your headphones. The sound is like the S60 first cream with correspondingly good headphones!
Doogee S70: Battery
The Doogee S70 in the analisis can be charged with the power supply via the included Type-C charging cable. Here is a special feature.
The slot for the cable is sunk a little deeper in the case of the smartphone so that the protective flap completely seals.
The 5500mAh strong battery creates about 2 days, with normal use – this varies depending on user behavior but is less long than the S60.
Here you can see the better features of the S70 which requires considerably more power. If you rarely look at the phone, the battery will easily make 4-5 days.
Thanks to the QuickCharge technology, the smartphone is fully charged within 2 hours and 30 minutes, due to the battery size a passable value.
Doogee S70: Conclusions and Reviews
The most crucial question in the whole test: How proven is the Doogee S70 in rugged use.
Thanks to the IP68 protection class, the smartphone survives a water depth of at least 1.5 m without time limit in the clear water and dust and dirt of all kinds.
I sunk the phone, like the S60, in the pool and it turns out that the S70 copes with this protection class.
With the device, I was also a few days on the Baltic Sea, in the deepest winter in the storm and absolute bad weather. An operation was possible in moderate rain and most of the inputs were very accurate.
Only in very heavy rains and a lot of water on the display, the operation was not possible without wiping.
The case proves to be extremely scratch-resistant, several times I dropped the Doogee S70 from chest height to the sandy bottom, paired with pebbles or deliberately pulled it over the beach floor, alternating with the display or the back.
Even after rough treatment, no scratches are noticeable – this is what the S70 impresses within the outdoor test.
Doogee S70: Price and Where to buy cheaper?
At the moment, you can buy a Doogee S70 rugged phone at a good and low price for only $214.99 on the basic configuration with a -14% discount.
Indeed, this is a good option, as for a protective rugged phone with which you will be sure of any fall into the water or on the ground.
