Chuwi Hi 8 Air: Packaging

The packaging is again quite unspectacular and comes in a simple white with Chuwi logo, therefore. On the back shortly the technical data.

The accessories are also quite meager, the package contains a short manual, a USB cable, OTG Cable and the Chinese power supply with 5V-2A.

Chuwi Hi 8 Air: Design and Appearance

The design of Chuwi Hi 8 Air in our test has not changed compared to the predecessor, so in my opinion, it does not really deserve the number 3 – you could have taken the photos from the Hi 8 Pro and nobody would have noticed. The front is again completely covered with glass and neatly framed in the metal frame on the sides.

The back is also completely made of aluminum and slightly blunt. So it ensures excellent feel and does not slip accidentally out of hand. However, it is quite vulnerable to scratches. With a case, you are probably best advised here.

At the bottom of the back, the Chuwi lettering graces the tablet again. Behind the Meschgitter left and right is two stereo speakers. Top left, the 2MP main camera which is embedded in the housing.

The side buttons for power, volume louder and quieter are also made of aluminum and are well integrated into the housing. The pressure point fits and they hardly wobble. On the bottom, there is then the Micro USB connector, Micro HDMI and the 3.5mm jack for headphones jack.

Chuwi Hi 8 Air: Display

The Chuwi Hi 8 Air in the analisis has an 8.0 inch Full HD display with a resolution of 1920 by 1200pixels. The panel is again an IPS LCD with a pixel density of 274ppi.

The Full HD display is excellent, pin sharp with a very good color saturation. Also black level and contrast are good for an LCD and so it’s just fun to look at pictures or videos or just to surf the web.

The viewing angle is alright but the display glass reflects very strongly. This is certainly not a problem in the house, but it’s hard to read outside in the sun.

The 8.0-inch display relies on a 4: 3 aspect ratio. For a tablet in my eyes the perfect form factor, because even if you keep it transversely, you can reach with the thumb almost all areas of the display.Even with high-resolution videos, the Chuwi Hi 8 Air is really fun and so can enjoy movies and TV series.

Chuwi Hi 8 Air: Hardware and Performance

The tablet Chuwi Hi 8 Air in the first look has a 1.92GHz 64-bit Intel Cherry Trail x5-Z8350 Quad Core processor, as a graphics unit is an Intel HD Gen8 used.

This GPU is already 2 years old and is not one of the high-end graphics chips, but the SoC-GPU combination is still sufficient for the most common applications and games.

Supports the SoC of 2GB LPDDR3 RAM, which also proper multitasking is possible. So you can have many apps open at the same time and switch back and forth between them.

The benchmark Antutut test scores of Chuwi Hi 8 Air are good 58832 points in AnTuTu and 891 SingleCore and 2030 MultiCore points in Geekbench 4.

In the highest resolution at e.g. Asphalt or other games you notice in between light mini-stuttering but not consistently, but rather rarely.

The most common games, such as Modern Combat 5, MMX Racing, Asphalt Airborn 8, The Rummy Three or Hearthstone ran absolutely smooth and without hangers.

Chuwi Hi 8 Air: Software

The Chuwi Hi 8 Air runs on both Android 5.1 and Windows 10 operating systems. The tablet was already unlocked and I could simply install the current Chuwi stable or developer via the updater.

Otherwise, the surface runs absolutely clean and smooth. The Chuwi Launcher of the Hi 8 Air is very well adapted and reminds as always a little of Apple’s iOS.

The launcher waives an app drawer, that is, all apps are placed directly on the surface and you have to create your own folders to create order.

On the left side of the screen, there is a kind of information center, which, however, as in the predecessor somehow not to use.

To change widgets, the background and effects when switching pages on the home screen, you simply pull two fingers (pitch-to-zoom) across the screen together.

Then you get a corresponding submenu. However, the widgets of their own apps cannot be placed over it.

As always, Hi 8 Air has countless configuration options that can be adjusted to just about anything. On the whole, there are always a few apps and functions missing on the Chuwi Hi 8 Air (themes, security etc.) of the usual UI interface.

On the settings themselves, we will not go into more detail, because that would go beyond the scope of the test.

Chuwi Hi 8 Air: Connectivity

The Mi Pad 3 supports Wi-Fi 802.11a / b / g / n / at 2.4GHz, as well as Bluetooth 4.0. Both worked perfectly in my test and the reception in the WLAN is very good. Unfortunately, the tablet does not have a GPS sensor.

Chuwi Hi 8 Air: Sounds

The two stereo speakers on the back provide an acceptable size for the size but the position can be argued. I find them a bit unfavorably placed because they sound firstly backward and often lay their hands on it.

Due to the lack of volume, they can of course, as with all devices of this size, not develop proper bass. Overall, the volume is very good if they did not stand back.

With headphones, the Chuwi Hi 8 Air delivers a very good sound with bass, so you can easily hear one or the other music or relax and enjoy a movie or series.

Chuwi Hi 8 Air: Cameras

As with most tablets, the cameras are not necessarily THE purchase criterion and cannot compete with current smartphone cams. With the Chuwi Hi 8 Pro, the camera was already quite not good and with the Chuwi Hi 8 Air its resolution to 2 megapixels.

The manufacturer decided not to change anything, and not improve, leave it as it is. Well, this is correct, since rarely anyone uses the camera on the tablets. Only for video chat or other purposes. Below you can see samples photos of Chuwi Hi 8 Air in different views:

Even with the Front cam with 2MP, you can certainly do one or the other video chat session quite well.

Chuwi Hi 8 Air: Battery

The battery capacity of the Chuwi Hi 8 Air is 4000mAh and has the same as on compared to its predecessor.

This ensures good battery life, in the synthetic PC Mark battery benchmark managed it a decent 8 hours of display-on-time (Screen-On-Time) and in Geekbench 4 it came to 8.45 hours. That’s pretty good values.

In reality, especially if you play a lot with it, you do not of course create such times.

The measured battery capacity is 4000mAh after three charging cycles. But it will develop a bit and should, therefore, be correct.

Unfortunately, there is no quick charge function that would have done the Chuwi Hi 8 Air very well. It takes about 2.5-3 hours to recharge.

Chuwi Hi 8 Air: Conclusions and Reviews

The differences to the predecessor are with the Chuwi Hi 8 Air in our reviews rather marginal, but already visually it is absolutely identical and also with the hardware the changes keep within limits.

Chuwi Hi 8 Air Review: Budget tablet with decent Performance in 2018

But that also has its advantages, because so you get here again an 8.0-inch 2K Full HD display with an aspect ratio of 4: 3. The IPS LCD panel is here again the real delicacy: the perfect size for couch surfing, crisp and sharp contrast – just fun.

The Intel processor has apparently done the tablet very well because even the overheating problems of its predecessor are history. Most games can play with it smoothly and the 32GB of memory should provide enough space, even if a MicroSD slot is still present.

The missing GPS sensor can also get over, unfortunately, the Chuwi Hi 8 Air but also comes back with a slightly stripped-down UI surface, which lacks some features.
